2024 Fall Semester Band and Orchestra Audition Information - Tentative
Fall semester auditions for Symphony Band, Concert Band, and Symphony Orchestra will be held collectively according to the timeline.
The audition will consist of selected excerpts, which will be posted by August 1. There will be no sightreading. Students that audition should complete an audition form before the day of the audition. The link to the audition form will be available in the late summer.
Report to your audition at the start time that is indicated for your instrument. Start times are approximate and dependent upon the number of students that audition. An audition could start later than scheduled, but not earlier than scheduled.
2024 CONCERT BAND AUDITION INFORMATION
The University of Iowa offers three concert bands each semester. The Symphony Band and Concert Band are open to students, regardless of major, by audition only.
Symphony Band rehearses MWF from 1:30-3:00PM and Concert Band rehearses MW from 1:30-3:00PM in the fall semester and 1:30-3:00 MWF in the spring semester.
No auditions are required for membership in University Band, which rehearses on Monday (and selected Wednesdays in the Fall) from 6:30-8:00PM, and Monday and Wednesday from 6:30-8:00PM in the spring semester.
SYMPHONY BAND: Any student, regardless of major, who wishes to participate in Symphony Band must audition for membership during the first week of classes. See the audition procedures and schedule below.
CONCERT BAND: Any student, regardless of major, who wishes to participate in Concert Band must audition for membership during the first week of classes. See the audition procedures and schedule below.
UNIVERSITY BAND: Auditions are not required for membership in University Band; however, chair placement auditions will be held during the first rehearsal. Chair placement consists of sight reading and one scale of the auditionee’s choice.
Students who wish to join University Band simply need to register for the appropriate course and report to the first rehearsal with your instrument on Wednesday, September 4.
SAXOPHONES: Due to the large number of music majors in the UI saxophone studio and the ensemble requirements for music majors, any non-music major student who is interested in performing saxophone in a concert band should plan to participate in University Band.
PERCUSSIONISTS: Percussion players for Symphony Band and Concert Band will be auditioned by Dr. Daniel Moore. Please contact Dr. Moore directly for audition information by email at daniel-moore@uiowa.edu.
AUDITION PROCEDURE: Students auditioning for Symphony Band, Concert Band, and/or Symphony Orchestra must audition in person during the assigned audition block. Students should locate the audition block for their instrument, and report a few minutes before the start time to sign up for an audition time. Auditions range from 5 to 8 minutes each. Auditions comprise required excerpts, which will be posted to this website by August 1. Band auditions are blind so the students who audition are not identified during the actual audition.
