2024 Spring Semester Band Audition Information
Spring semester auditions for Symphony Band and Concert Band will be held by individual appointment in VOX 4000 on
Friday, 12/8, Monday, 12/11 and Tuesday, 12/12.
The audition consists of a (1) prepared work (student’s choice) of approximately one minute in length and (2) two-octave Concert F chromatic scale. There will be no sightreading.

2023 CONCERT BAND AUDITION INFORMATION
The University of Iowa offers three concert bands each semester. The Symphony Band and Concert Band are open to students, regardless of major, by audition only.
Symphony Band rehearses MWF from 1:30-3:00PM and Concert Band rehearses MW from 1:30-3:00PM in the fall semester and 1:30-3:00 MWF in the spring semester.
No auditions are required for membership in University Band, which rehearses on Monday (and selected Wednesdays in the Fall) from 6:30-8:00PM, and Monday and Wednesday from 6:30-8:00PM in the spring semester.
All new woodwind, brass, and percussion majors are expected to audition for either Symphony Band or Concert Band.
SYMPHONY BAND: Any student, regardless of major, who wishes to participate in Symphony Band must audition for membership during the first week of classes. See the audition procedures and schedule below.
CONCERT BAND: Any student, regardless of major, who wishes to participate in Concert Band must audition for membership during the first week of classes. See the audition procedures and schedule below.
UNIVERSITY BAND: Auditions are not required for membership in University Band; however, chair placement auditions will be held during the first rehearsal. Chair placement consists of sight reading and one scale of the auditionee’s choice.
Students who wish to join University Band simply need to register for the appropriate course and report to the first rehearsal with your instrument on Monday, August 28.
SAXOPHONES: Due to the large number of music majors in the UI saxophone studio and the ensemble requirements for music majors, any non-music major student who is interested in performing saxophone in a concert band should plan to participate in University Band.
PERCUSSIONISTS: Percussion players for Symphony Band and Concert Band will be auditioned by Dr. Daniel Moore. Please contact Dr. Moore directly for audition information by email at daniel-moore@uiowa.edu.
AUDITION PROCEDURE: Students auditioning for either Symphony Band or Concert Band must audition in person during the assigned audition block. Students should locate the audition block for their instrument, and report a few minutes before the start time to sign up for an audition time. Auditions range from 5 to 8 minutes each. Band auditions comprise required excerpts, which will be posted to this website by Friday, August 4, and a brief sight-reading excerpt given at the audition. Band auditions are blind so the students who audition are not identified during the actual audition.
INSTRUMENT RENTAL: If you need to rent an instrument for use in one of the concert bands, please contact Chad walker (chad-walker@uiowa.edu), UI Instrument Technician, or Kara Metzger (kara-metzger@uiowa.edu), UI Band Teaching Assistant.

**Report to the audition block for your instrument a few minutes early to sign up for an audition time. Audition start times are approximate and dependent upon the number of students that audition. An audition could start slightly later than scheduled, but not earlier than scheduled.
